Selling your IBC totes to IBC Recycling Chicago is straightforward. No minimum quantities, no complicated paperwork, and no surprises. Here is the process from start to finish.

01

Contact Us for a Quote

Call, email, or fill out our online form. Tell us how many totes you have, their approximate condition, what they previously contained, and your location. Photos are helpful but not required. We respond with an initial quote within 2 hours during business hours.

02

Receive Your Quote

We respond within hours with a per-unit buyback price based on the information you provide. Quotes are valid for 14 days and include free pickup within our standard Chicagoland service zone. For locations outside the metro area, we include any applicable transport adjustments.

03

Schedule Free Pickup

Accept the quote and we schedule a pickup at your facility. Our trucks are equipped with forklifts and experienced operators who handle all loading. You do not need to prep or palletize anything. We work around your schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

04

Get Paid

Once the totes arrive at our facility and pass a brief visual inspection, we issue payment. Choose between check, wire transfer, ACH deposit, or credit toward future IBC tote purchases. Typical payment turnaround is 3-5 business days after pickup.

Condition Assessment Guide

Five Condition Grades and What They Mean for Your Payout

We buy totes in every condition, from pristine food-grade containers to heavily damaged units that can only be recycled. Here is our detailed grading system showing exactly how condition affects your payout. The short answer: they all have value.

Excellent / Grade A

Highest payout

Clean, clear bottle with no staining or discoloration. Cage is straight and rust-free. Pallet intact. Previously contained food-grade materials. All threads on fill cap and discharge outlet are in perfect condition. Original UN/DOT markings are legible. No odor present after draining. Valve operates smoothly with no leaks. These are premium totes that can be reconditioned for food-grade resale with minimal processing.

Typical Range

$25 - $65 per tote

Good / Grade B

Standard payout

Minor scuffing or light staining on the bottle. Cage may have surface rust but is structurally sound. Pallet has minor wear. Previously contained industrial liquids. Faint residual odor may be present but is removable through our cleaning process. Valve is functional but may need gasket replacement. Lid threads are in good condition. These totes are ideal candidates for reconditioning for industrial resale.

Typical Range

$15 - $35 per tote

Fair / Grade C

Reduced payout

Noticeable staining, moderate scuffing, or discoloration on the bottle. Cage has visible wear, repaired bars, or moderate rust. Pallet may be damaged but still holds the tote. May have contained industrial chemicals with noticeable residual staining. Valve may be damaged or missing. These totes are typically rebottled with a new inner container or recycled for component materials.

Typical Range

$5 - $20 per tote

Poor / Recycle-Only

Recycling value

Cracked or punctured bottle, collapsed cage, or significant structural damage. Not suitable for reconditioning but still has value as recyclable material. The HDPE plastic, steel cage, and wooden pallet all have commodity value that we recover through our recycling program. We take them all, regardless of condition, because every component has value in the recycling stream.

Typical Range

$1 - $8 per tote

Hazmat / Previously Contained Hazardous Materials

Adjusted value

Totes that previously contained hazardous materials as defined by EPA and RCRA regulations. These require special handling, manifesting, and disposal procedures. We accept hazmat totes but the buyback rate accounts for the additional processing costs. Please have SDS (Safety Data Sheet) information available for the prior contents when requesting a quote.

Typical Range

Quote required

Not sure about your totes? Send us photos and we will provide an accurate quote. We have seen it all and we buy it all. Even damaged totes that cannot be reconditioned are valuable as recycling feedstock. Our assessment is free, fast, and completely non-binding.

Transparent Pricing

15 Factors That Determine Your Buyback Price

We believe in transparent, fair pricing. Here are all the factors we consider when quoting your IBC totes. No hidden fees, no bait-and-switch. You will know exactly how we arrived at your price.

1

Container Condition

The overall physical condition of the bottle, cage, valve, and pallet is the primary pricing driver. Better condition means higher payout. We assess each component independently.

2

Prior Contents

Totes that held food-grade materials command higher prices because they qualify for food-grade reconditioning. Totes that contained hazardous chemicals may require additional processing, which affects the buyback rate.

3

Quantity

Selling 10 or more totes? You qualify for higher per-unit rates. Full truckloads (48-80 units) receive our premium bulk buyback pricing. Volume sellers are our preferred partners.

4

Tote Size

275-gallon and 330-gallon totes are both accepted. Standard 275-gallon totes are in highest demand and may receive a slight pricing advantage due to market conditions.

5

Valve & Fittings

Totes with intact, functioning butterfly or camlock valves are worth more than those with missing or damaged fittings. A working valve saves us replacement cost, which translates to a higher payout for you.

6

Location

Totes within our standard Chicagoland pickup zone incur no transport fee. Pickups beyond the metro area may have a small logistics adjustment deducted from your payout, but we always disclose this upfront.

7

Bottle Clarity

Clear, unstained HDPE bottles are worth more than heavily discolored ones. A clear bottle can be reconditioned for food-grade resale, while a stained bottle may only qualify for industrial use or rebottling.

8

Cage Integrity

Straight, rust-free cages with no bent or broken bars add value. Cages that need extensive repair or replacement reduce the buyback rate proportionally to the repair cost.

9

Pallet Condition

Intact, load-bearing pallets with no broken boards or split runners contribute positively to the tote value. Damaged pallets are still accepted but factor into the overall assessment.

10

Label and Marking Condition

Totes with legible original UN/DOT markings and minimal adhesive residue from old labels are easier and cheaper to recondition, which means a better payout.

11

Age of Tote

Newer totes generally have better HDPE bottle integrity and cage condition. Manufacturing date stamps help us assess remaining useful life, which factors into reconditioning value.

12

Market Demand

Buyback prices reflect current market conditions for reconditioned IBC totes. Prices may be higher during peak demand periods such as spring agricultural season and lower during off-peak months.

13

Fill Cap and Thread Condition

Intact threads on the fill cap opening ensure the tote can be properly sealed after reconditioning. Damaged threads may require the bottle to be replaced rather than reconditioned.

14

Residual Content Volume

Empty or nearly empty totes are preferred. Totes with significant residual liquid require additional draining and disposal processing, which can affect the buyback rate.

15

Consistency of Batch

Selling a batch of totes that all contained the same product and are in similar condition is more efficient for us to process, which may result in a per-unit premium for consistent lots.

Valuation Process

How We Determine the Value of Your Totes

Our valuation process considers what the tote is worth in its next life. A tote that can be reconditioned and resold as a Grade A food-grade container has significantly more value than one that needs to be recycled for its raw materials. Our pricing reflects this downstream value.

When you contact us, our team performs a preliminary assessment based on the information and photos you provide. This gives us a ballpark range for your quote. When our driver arrives for pickup, they perform a quick on-site inspection to verify the condition and finalize the per-unit price. In the vast majority of cases, the final price matches or exceeds the initial quote.

We evaluate each tote against three possible disposition pathways: reconditioning (highest value to us, highest payout to you), rebottling (mid-range value as we reuse the cage and pallet but install a new bottle), and recycling (lowest value as we recover only raw material commodity prices). The more components we can reuse, the more we can pay you.

Our pricing is updated weekly based on current market conditions for reconditioned totes, recycled HDPE, scrap steel, and wood pallet values. This means our buyback rates reflect real market value, not arbitrary numbers. We are happy to explain the specific factors that went into your quote if you want full transparency.

What Happens Next

What Happens to Your Totes After We Buy Them

Every tote we purchase enters one of three processing streams based on its condition and prior contents. Nothing goes to waste. Here is exactly where your totes end up.

Reconditioning Stream (Grade A-B)

The best totes are cleaned, inspected, and reconditioned for resale. The original bottle is retained, thoroughly washed using our triple-rinse and high-pressure protocol, fitted with new valves and gaskets, re-certified with fresh UN/DOT markings, and sold to businesses that need quality containers at a fraction of new price.

Rebottling Stream (Grade B-C)

Totes with good cages and pallets but bottles that cannot be adequately cleaned receive a brand-new HDPE inner bottle. The cage is inspected, repaired if needed, and re-certified. This gives the tote a completely fresh interior while reusing the structural components.

Recycling Stream (Grade C and below)

Totes that cannot be economically reconditioned or rebottled are disassembled into their three core components. The HDPE bottle is shredded and granulated into pellets, the steel cage is baled and sent to metal recyclers, and the wooden pallet is repaired for reuse or chipped into mulch. Every component finds a second life.

Documentation

What You Need to Provide

SDS / Safety Data Sheet

Required

For the product previously stored in the tote. This tells us what was in the container and determines the cleaning protocol and disposition pathway. If you do not have the SDS, tell us the product name and we will look it up.

Bill of Lading or Proof of Ownership

For large quantities (50+ totes), we may request documentation confirming you are the owner or authorized seller of the containers. This protects both parties in the transaction.

Quantity Count and Location

Required

An accurate count of the number of totes you want to sell and the pickup address. This helps us send the right size truck and plan efficient pickup routing.

Photos (Recommended)

Clear photos of representative totes showing the bottle, cage, valve, and pallet condition. Photos from 3-4 angles are sufficient. This enables us to provide the most accurate initial quote before the on-site assessment.

Tax ID / W-9 Form

For payouts exceeding $600 in a calendar year, IRS regulations require a W-9 form for 1099-MISC reporting. We will request this when applicable.

Tax Info

Tax Considerations

1099-MISC Reporting

Per IRS regulations, we issue a 1099-MISC form for any seller who receives $600 or more in total buyback payments during a calendar year. We will request a W-9 form when this threshold is approaching.

Sales Tax Exemption

The sale of used IBC totes to a recycler or reconditioner is generally exempt from Illinois sales tax. You are selling us used containers, not purchasing a taxable product. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.

Business Expense vs. Income

Buyback payments received for IBC totes are typically classified as miscellaneous income for tax purposes. If the totes were originally purchased as business assets, the buyback amount may offset the depreciated value. Consult your accountant for proper classification.

Environmental Tax Credits

Some jurisdictions offer tax incentives for recycling and waste diversion. We provide recycling certificates and environmental impact documentation that may support eligibility for these programs. Ask us for details.

If your business regularly generates empty IBC totes, our bulk seller program is designed for you. Manufacturers, distributors, food processors, chemical companies, and other high-volume tote users benefit from premium per-unit rates, priority pickup scheduling, and dedicated account management.

Bulk sellers who commit to 50 or more totes per month receive our highest per-unit buyback rates, guaranteed same-week pickup service, and a dedicated account representative who manages all logistics. Our largest bulk seller partners have their buyback rates locked in through annual contracts that protect against market fluctuations. This guarantees predictable revenue from your tote disposal stream regardless of seasonal demand changes.
