IBC Tote Types Explained
We carry four distinct product types to match your budget, application, and regulatory requirements. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right tote for your needs.
Rebottled IBC Totes
A brand-new HDPE bottle installed inside an existing galvanized steel cage and mounted on a reconditioned pallet. Rebottled totes offer the performance of a new container at a fraction of the cost. The bottle has never held any product, so they are suitable for food-grade and sensitive applications. We source our replacement bottles from top-tier domestic manufacturers and pressure-test every unit before it leaves our facility.
Reconditioned IBC Totes
Thoroughly cleaned, inspected, and restored to working condition. Our reconditioning process includes a multi-stage wash with hot water and approved detergents, full valve rebuild or replacement, cage straightening, and pallet repair or swap. Each reconditioned tote undergoes a leak test and visual inspection before being approved for resale. Reconditioning extends the useful life of an IBC tote by 3-5 additional fill cycles.
Food-Grade IBC Totes
Certified for contact with food products, beverages, and potable water. Our food-grade totes are either new-bottle rebottles or Grade A containers that previously held food-safe materials such as juices, oils, syrups, or flavorings. Every food-grade tote is triple-rinsed, sanitized, and comes with documentation of its prior contents. We maintain strict chain-of-custody records to ensure full traceability.
Industrial-Grade IBC Totes
Built for chemical storage, manufacturing, and heavy-duty applications. Industrial-grade totes handle everything from non-hazardous chemicals and solvents to agricultural fertilizers and cleaning agents. Available across all three condition grades, these totes prioritize structural integrity and chemical compatibility over cosmetic appearance, making them the most cost-effective option for non-food industrial use.
Understanding Our Grading System
Every IBC tote that enters our facility is evaluated against a rigorous checklist covering bottle condition, cage integrity, pallet soundness, valve function, and cosmetic appearance. Each tote is assigned one of three grades so you know exactly what you are getting.

What Determines IBC Tote Pricing?
IBC tote pricing is not one-size-fits-all. Several factors influence the price of each unit. Understanding these factors will help you make the most cost-effective purchasing decision for your specific needs.
Container Size
The 330-gallon IBC tote costs 10 to 15 percent more than the 275-gallon model, but it delivers 20 percent more capacity. On a cost-per-gallon basis, the 330-gallon tote is usually the better value for operations that can accommodate the extra height and weight.
Condition Grade
Grade A totes command the highest price because they require minimal reconditioning and are suitable for the widest range of applications, including food-grade. Grade B offers the best balance of price and condition for most industrial users. Grade C is the budget option for non-sensitive applications where cosmetic appearance does not matter.
Tote Type
Rebottled totes with a brand-new HDPE bottle cost more than reconditioned totes that retain the original bottle. Food-grade certified totes carry a premium over industrial-grade because of the additional cleaning, documentation, and chain-of-custody requirements.
Order Quantity
Volume discounts begin at 10 units and increase at 25, 50, 100, and full-truckload quantities. A full truckload of 275-gallon totes is typically 56 to 60 units. Bulk buyers save 10 to 25 percent compared to single-unit pricing.
Previous Contents
Totes that previously held benign materials like water, juice, or soap are priced higher than those that held industrial chemicals, because they require less cleaning and are suitable for a wider range of second uses. Totes with unknown or hazardous previous contents are priced at the low end after thorough decontamination.
Pallet Condition
Totes on intact, undamaged pallets command a slight premium over those with repaired or replacement pallets. Steel pallets and HDPE composite pallets are more expensive than wood pallets but offer longer life and better hygiene for food-grade use.
Our 12-Point Inspection Process
Before any IBC tote earns its grade and enters our sales inventory, it passes through a detailed 12-point inspection performed by trained technicians at our 2645 American Ln facility in Elk Grove Village, IL. Here is exactly what we check.
Bottle Crack Detection
We visually and manually inspect every surface of the HDPE bottle for hairline cracks, stress fractures, and impact damage. The bottle is flexed at known stress points around the valve connection, corner folds, and lifting lugs. Any crack, no matter how small, results in immediate rejection to the recycling stream.
UV Degradation Assessment
Prolonged sunlight exposure causes HDPE to become brittle, discolored, and structurally weak. We assess bottle translucency, surface texture, and flexibility. Bottles that show yellowing, chalking, or reduced flexibility are downgraded or rejected. This test is especially important for totes that spent time in outdoor storage yards.
Valve Leak Testing
Every valve is cycled from fully open to fully closed multiple times and tested under water pressure for drips at the seat, shaft, and body-to-bottle connection. Valves that leak are replaced with new units. We test both the valve itself and the threaded connection where it screws into the bottle outlet.
Thread Integrity Check
Both the 6-inch top fill port threads and the 2-inch bottom valve threads are inspected for stripping, cross-threading, and deformation. We hand-thread a test cap and valve onto each port to verify smooth engagement and proper sealing. Damaged threads cannot be repaired and result in rejection.
Cage Weld Inspection
The galvanized steel cage is a welded wire grid structure that supports the bottle under hydrostatic load. We inspect every visible weld for cracks, cold joints, and corrosion breakage. A cage with broken welds can allow the bottle to bulge and eventually rupture under load. Failed cages are separated for metal recycling.
Cage Straightness Test
Dented, bent, or twisted cages are assessed for severity. Minor cosmetic dents that do not contact the bottle are acceptable for Grade B and C. Significant deformation that restricts bottle expansion under fill pressure or prevents clean stacking is grounds for rejection or cage replacement.
Pallet Load Rating
The pallet must safely support the filled weight of the tote: approximately 2,410 lbs for a 275-gallon and 2,890 lbs for a 330-gallon unit filled with water. We inspect runner integrity, deck board condition, nail or bolt fastening, and overall structural soundness. Pallets that pass are rated for continued service; those that fail are replaced.
Pallet Runner Condition
Forklift fork entry points on the pallet runners must be free of splits, rot, and damage that could cause the pallet to collapse during lifting. We check all four entry sides and verify that the runner height allows standard pallet jack wheels to engage properly.
Interior Residue Analysis
We open the fill cap and visually inspect the interior of the bottle for residual product, scale, biofilm, or sediment. Totes destined for food-grade sale undergo a rinse-water conductivity test to verify cleaning completeness. Persistent residue that cannot be removed by our wash process results in downgrading to industrial-grade or rejection.
Odor Evaluation
HDPE is slightly porous and can absorb strong odors from certain chemicals, especially solvents, fragrances, and sulfur-based compounds. We open each tote and evaluate residual odor. Totes with persistent, objectionable odors are not sold for food-grade use and may be downgraded or diverted to repurposing projects.
Label & Marking Review
We document all existing labels, UN markings, manufacturer plates, and hazard placards on every tote. This information is used to identify the original manufacturer, determine previous contents, and verify UN certification status. Labels from previous contents are removed or covered before resale unless they contain required regulatory markings.
Hydrostatic Pressure Test
The final test fills the tote with water to nominal capacity and holds it under static pressure for a minimum observation period to verify that there are no leaks at the valve, lid, or any point on the bottle surface. Totes that pass all twelve inspection points are assigned their condition grade and moved to sales inventory.

What Happens to Totes That Fail?
Not every tote that arrives at our yard makes it into sales inventory. Containers with cracked bottles, compromised welds, or persistent chemical odors are diverted to our recycling stream. The HDPE bottle is granulated and sold to plastics reclaimers. The steel cage is baled and sent to a metal recycler. The wood or plastic pallet is repaired, recycled, or chipped for biomass fuel. Nothing goes to landfill. In a typical month, approximately 15 to 20 percent of incoming totes are diverted to recycling rather than resale, which keeps our sales inventory quality high and ensures that every tote we sell meets our published grade standards.
Inspection Turnaround Time
A single tote takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete the full 12-point inspection. Our team processes incoming loads of 50 to 60 totes in a single shift, meaning that a full truckload of totes received in the morning is graded, tagged, and ready for sale by the end of the same business day. This rapid turnaround ensures that our inventory is always fresh and that we can fill orders quickly, even for large quantities.
What Is Included with Every Tote
Every IBC tote sold by IBC Recycling Chicago ships as a complete, ready-to-use unit. Here is what you receive with every purchase.
2" Bottom Discharge Valve
Every tote ships with a functional 2-inch butterfly valve installed in the bottom outlet. The valve is either the original factory valve (if it passed our leak test) or a brand-new replacement. The polypropylene body and EPDM gasket are compatible with most non-aggressive chemicals and water-based products. Upgraded ball valves and stainless-steel valves are available as add-on options.
6" Threaded Fill Cap
The top fill opening is sealed with a 6-inch (150mm) screw-on cap that includes a new gasket. Our standard cap is a solid, non-vented design suitable for sealed storage. We also offer vented caps with built-in pressure relief for products that off-gas, and tamper-evident caps for regulatory compliance. The cap threads are inspected for damage and replaced if worn.
Pallet Base
Every tote is mounted on a structurally sound pallet that has been inspected for load-bearing capacity. Standard pallets are hardwood with 4-way forklift and pallet-jack entry. We also stock totes on steel pallets and HDPE composite pallets for food-grade and clean-room applications. The pallet footprint is 48 inches by 40 inches, the North American standard.
Galvanized Steel Cage
The welded wire cage surrounds and supports the HDPE bottle, preventing bulging under hydrostatic pressure and providing impact protection during transport and storage. The galvanized finish resists corrosion for outdoor use. Cage condition varies by grade: Grade A cages are in excellent condition, Grade B may show minor surface oxidation, and Grade C may have cosmetic dents.
Grade Tag and Documentation
Every tote sold by IBC Recycling Chicago ships with a condition grade tag affixed to the cage that identifies the grade, inspection date, previous contents (when known), and our facility tracking number. Food-grade totes include additional documentation of prior contents and cleaning verification. This paperwork is essential for regulatory compliance and inventory management.
